about

This song was written by both Keith Ludekens then later put to music written by Matt Campbell.
Keith's original lyrics were penned then hung around on his fridge magnet for a while.
Till Keith gave them to Matt and asked can you
"do something with these?"

The result is a bitter sweet love song of loss and murder.

lyrics

With a wink of her eye and that chardonnay smile
She said "boy do you wanna come dance a while?"
it was then that I thought that her grip on my heart
Would be stronger than everI'd known

Well her hair it was black like the coal from the ground and her eyes held me captive
My love I had found but if I was aware of the trouble I'd bear
I'd have turned around
and walked on alone

Ah Lily I was captive
Lily when you coming home
Lily don;t leave me here all alone

Our love it was fair, our love it was kind
our love was something most people don't find
It was something that tugged on the
mesh of our souls
It was something to never grow cold

Now I'd heard of those women,
of those ladies of the night
But I couldn't have dreamed that my Lily
She might
Please the men of that town
with her hair flowin' down on her shoulder
So bare and so bold

Ned Cutter that scoundrel that brute salty rogue
Has a passion for Lily or so I'm told
But passion turned sour in my love's darkest hour
And he cut her down dead as stone

I ponder our lives better times that we had
Standin' here at this cold marble slab
With a slash at her throat where her life had poured out
My love she will never come home
